Germany took silver and the Czech Republic bronze.

It's the first time Australia has won OIympic gold in the event in its 85-year history.

The duo were locked in a tight battle with the German crew throughout the race.

The Australians had a narrow lead at the 500m mark, with the Germans pulling up to them with 300m to go.

In the sprint to the line, Green and van der Westhuyzen found an extra gear to win by less than half a boat length.

The pair did not have the results they wanted in the individual events, but the pair were able to re-focus ahead of the race and "enjoy" it, according to van der Westhuyzen.

"We were quite relaxed on the start line and I think this whole week we've been relatively relaxed," he said.

"We had a chat last night and we said, hey, let's just go and have fun, we know what we're capable of so let's go and enjoy this experience."

Green told media he was struggling to come to terms that he had become Olympic champion.

"It hasn't sunk in yet but jeez, when I crossed that line and saw the coaches, it hit me hard," he said.

"I tried to speak to Mum but I found it really hard. My emotions are all over the joint, I'm so happy."
