Tom Gilzean and Shelley Kerr among Edinburgh and Lothians heroes honoured with MBEs

Two well known Edinburgh and Lothian icons have had their achievements recognised in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

For services to Charitable Fundraising in Edinburgh, dedicated charity fundraiser and war veteran Tom Gilzean has been awarded an MBE.

A familiar face on Princes Street , the 99-year-old has worked tirelessly for over 20 years to raise money for the Sick Kids hospital - whatever the weather.

Recognisable for many by his signature tartan trousers and war medals, this Edinburgh hero has now raised an incredible £1 million for charity.

Last year alone, he donated £30,000 to the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, which  funded  the Surgical Day Case waiting area and a discharge lounge for children and their  families .

Shelley Kerr of West Lothian , the manager of Scotland women’s national football team , is to be awarded an MBE for her services to the game.

The 49-year-old, who, captained Scotland during her playing career said: “It’s a tremendous honour and one I’m immensely proud of.”

News of the recognition in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list comes as the  Scotland team  prepare to kick off their debut Women’s World Cup finals campaign with a clash against England tomorrow.

Kerr and Gilzean are two among several Scots to be honoured by the Queen.

As revealed by the Daily Record , Boyd Tunnock, the man who invented the  Tunnock’s  Teacake, has been knighted.

Tunnock, now dubbed “Sir Teacake”, receives the honour for services to business and to charity.
