Tom Flanagan will stay with Sunderland next season after signing a new contract with the Black Cats.
The Northern Ireland international defender joined the club in 2018 on a two-year deal which expired at the end of June.
But Flanagan was offered a new two-year deal on Wearside, and has now committed his future to the Black Cats until 2022.
The 28-year-old said: "It's been an uncertain time in every sense, so it's good to have it signed and sealed, and I'll be raring to go once we return to training.
"I get on really well with the manager and I like his management style, so I'm really looking forward to the next two years.
"There is definitely unfinished business for me at the club, so I can't wait to be back."
Manager Phil Parkinson added: "I'm really pleased that we've agreed a new deal with Tom.
"He's a good character and an excellent professional, and we are all looking forward to working with him again during the upcoming season."
Flanagan was a regular at the heart of defence in his first season on Wearside, but he made only a handful of appearances in the first half of last season.
However he featured more heavily from December onwards, and with Parkinson expected to continue with the 3-4-3 system he used last term, Flanagan's ability to play in different roles across the back three will be an asset.
Flanagan has made 64 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring four goals.
