Tom Daley turns knitting skills into making knock-off versions of Gucci dresses

Fancy a nice, new designer frock, without the £2000 price tag?

Make like Tom Daley and knit yourself a knock-off.

The Olympic diver, 26, became a crochet enthusiast during the first lockdown and has progressed to being able to replicate a pricey Gucci dress - from his offcuts.

Tom lovingly crafted this identical striped halterneck for his friend Sophie Lee, that would otherwise have set her back a small fortune.

It includes an impressive attention to detail, including perfectly placed tassels.

“I made this dress for my bestie,” presented Tom, proudly. ”My original aim was to make a Gucci £1,750 dress.

“I made it with leftover yarn I had from a previous project.”

Sophie, naturally, loves her fashionable freebie.

Tom certainly spins a good yarn thanks to Olympic levels of commitment to his hobby.

Since first picking up a pair of needles last year, he has spent three hours every evening knitting jumpers, cardigans and even a tank top, as well as soft toys for his two-year-old son, Robbie.

He’s also knitted some more obscure items, including a crochet plant holder, his family’s Christmas table decorations - and even a pair of woollen Speedos.

“It is strangely therapeutic,” he has said of his “new obsession”. “My happy place is now on the sofa with knitting needles.”

Saves him a few quid, too.
