Tom Daley announces he'll miss Commonwealth Games after making family promise

Team GB diver Tom Daley has confirmed he will not be competing at this summer's Commonwealth Games, after committing to spend time with his family. Daley who has four Commonwealth golds and one silver to his name, confirmed his absence following a post on his Instagram account.

In a statement the 28-year-old confirmed that he would be taking time 'to rest and be with my family' instead of heading to Birmingham. He wrote: " I won’t be competing in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

"Before the Olympics last year, my coach and I decided I would take a year out from the sport to have some time to rest and be with my family.

"Can’t wait to watch all my team mates kick some butt this summer!" Daley is married to partner Dustin Lance Black, after the pair tied he knot back in 2017. They also have a son Robert, who was born via a surrogate.

Daley has enjoyed a busy career on the diving board since bursting on the scene as a teenager in 2008 at the Beijing Olympic Games. The Englishman found himself competing in his fourth Olympics last summer, when out at the rearranged 2021 event in Tokyo.

And, it was a successful Games for Daley as he finally secured his first ever Olympic gold medal after winning the synchronised 10-metre platform event with his diving partner Matty Lee.

The coveted gold was his fourth honour at the Games, having won a bronze in the single event that same year, to add to two further third place finishes in 2016 and 2012.

At the Commonwealth Games, Daley has also enjoyed plenty of success when out competing in the Team GB colours. The diving star has won two single gold medals from 10 metres in 2010 and 2014, as well as two synchronised top prizes in 2010 and 2018, and a silver in 2014.
