Tom Cruise to be joined by The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman for film shot in outer space

The Tom Cruise-starring action film to be shot in outer space is reportedly going ahead, with The Bourne Identity‘s Doug Liman attached to direct.

On 4 May, reports emerged that Cruise was planning to venture into space for his next film, with the assistance of Elon Musk’s SpaceX programme and NASA, which was confirmed by NASA a day later.

It has now been revealed by Deadlinethat Liman, who also directed Cruise in Edge of Tomorrowand American Made, has been a crucial part of the project’s development.

According to the outlet, Liman and Cruise “hatched this whole thing together, with Liman writing the first draft of the screenplay and producing along with Cruise".

Both Cruise and Liman need to wrap up existing projects before filming can begin on the as-yet-untitled space thriller.

The project will also, inevitably, involve extensive pre-production, including training for the cast and crew to be able to withstand a flight into outer space.

Cruise has previously performed many of his own stunts on film, which have included hanging from the side of a jet in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and scaling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

During filming for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cruise broke his ankle while jumping from one rooftop to another.
