Tom Cruise is tipped to take the lead in a new comedy called Bob the Musical, according to TheWrap.

The script, which had been stuck in development hell since 2004, has been gaining momentum again at Disney. Cruise would play a man who suffers a blow to the head that allows him to hear everyone else’s inner songs – thus turning his life into a musical, much to his annoyance.

Disney are also eyeing Michel Hazanavicius, who won an Oscar for The Artist, to direct. The French director Hazanavicius had also recently been attached to another US comedy, Will.

Bob the Musical has been through numerous potential iterations in Hollywood since the script emerged in 2004. Directors such as Hairspray’s Adam Shankman and The Lego Movie’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been interested, while various composers have come and gone. The most recent draft of the script comes from Allan Loeb, best known for Jennifer Aniston comedies The Switch and Just Go With It as well as the Kevin James comedies Here Comes the Boom and The Dilemma.

If Tom Cruise takes on the role, it would be his first comedy since 2012’s Rock of Ages, also scripted by Loeb. He’ll next be seen in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, this summer.
