Mission: Accepted.
Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have signed on for another two Mission: Impossible films, for release in the summers of 2021 and 2022.
McQuarrie – who wrote and directed last years Mission: Impossible – Fallout – will return to helm the seventh and eighth instalments in the franchise.
Variety reports that both films will be shot back-to-back, not unlike Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The films would have come sooner to capitalise on the series’ current popularity, but the studio wanted to wait until 2021 so as to not compete with fellow Cruise vehicle Top Gun: Maverick.
Oblivion‘s Joseph Kosinski will direct the Top Gun sequel, which has been co-written by McQuarrie.
Cruise and McQuarrie confirmed their involvement with the Mission: Impossible sequels on Twitter.
McQuarrie had been saying in recent interviews that he wanted to move on from Mission: Impossible – having also directed the fifth instalment, Rogue Nation – but Paramount Studios continued to pursue the filmmaker thanks to Fallout’s phenomenal box-office takings.
Work on the script will begin imminently, with the studio hoping to shoot some time this year.
