Tom Crean landed a top-5 recruit at Georgia and people had jokes

Anthony Edwards, a top-5 high school basketball recruit out of the state of Georgia, committed to the University of Georgia on Monday, choosing the Bulldogs over perennial SEC powerhouse Kentucky.

It was a huge signing for head coach Tom Crean, who landed the program’s first 5-star player since they’ve tracked such things, and sent a huge statement to the rest of the SEC that Georgia is no longer messing around.

It also brought some jokes about how, exactly, Crean landed the first 5-star recruit in his program’s history.

Before we get to those jokes, let me put a huge disclaimer here that Edwards is from Georgia, and he cited the fact that Crean had coached Dwyane Wade and Victor Oladipo in previous stops at Marquette and Indiana, respectively, as a major deciding factor for him in choosing the Bulldogs. (Edwards is a shooting guard, like Wade and Oladipo.)

Georgia probably should do a better job recruiting in state, and have famously lost out on a ton of in-state talent to bigger programs elsewhere. Them landing a big player in-state was bound to happen eventually. So it’s by no means a certainty that something untoward or against NCAA rules is happening here that got Edwards to commit to a program with lesser prestige like Georgia.

But that didn’t stop anyone from suggesting otherwise. Plus, it feels good to laugh. Let’s get to the jokes.

We got a bag man one to kick us off!

This one is just not very subtle at all:

Nor was this one:

We got some good Tom Crean GIFs in here too:

And one more:

Good for Georgia basketball. Good for all of y’all making good jokes that made me laugh this morning. Shout out the other Anthony Edwards, who was great on ER. Pay the players.
