Tom Coughlin still hopes to resume his coaching career after parting ways with the Giants in January, but he'll spend the 2016 season in the NFL operations department.
Coughlin, who turns 70 on Aug. 31, will serve as an adviser to the league's football operations staff, working closely with league vice president Troy Vincent and his staff on a variety of issues to support and improve the game. He will work with all related league-appointed committees, including the influential competition committee. Giants president and co-owner John Mara, who replaced Coughlin with Ben McAdoo as the Giants' coach, is on the competition committee.
Coughlin won two Super Bowl titles during a 12-year run with the Giants from 2004-2015. He won championships after the 2007 and 2011 seasons, joining Bill Parcells as the only coach in franchise history to win two Super Bowls.
Coughlin was interviewed for head coaching positions in Philadelphia and San Francisco after the 2015 season. The Eagles eventually hired Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, and the 49ers hired Chip Kelly, who was fired by the Eagles with one game remaining in 2015.
Coughlin attended the NFL Scouting Combine in February to sit in on meetings with coaches, as well as the competition committee.
