Tom Coughlin says Jags are working hard towards free agency, draft and playbook ‘revitalization’

Tom Coughlin and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ front office have been rather quiet this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been hard at work. Thanks to the crew at Action News Jax, however, fans were finally able to get something out of the legendary coach as he was doing a bit of charity work in Jacksonville for his Jay Fund Foundation. Below is what he had to say on the front office’s mindset heading forward.

“Everyone is full speed ahead,” Coughlin said. “Whether it be working on free agency, whether it be working on the draft, whether it be revitalization of the playbook and going over the research that people are starting to develop and put together. It’s full speed ahead because this time of the year is the time when these decisions are made from a personnel standpoint.”

That’s pretty much your typical speech of not revealing much by Coughlin, however, one thing did catch my ears and that was the ‘revitalization’ of the playbook part. Many have come out to say he simply was referring to sorting out the plays that worked and those that didn’t in 2019, but there may be more to it. With the team naming John DeFilippo their offensive coordinator last month, some have begun to wonder if the Jags will lean more towards becoming a pass first team. Personally, I don’t think that will be the case though I think they could be looking for more balance, but to hear him use the word ‘revitalization’ was interesting, especially when considering how archaic the team has been over the past two years.

Coughlin also chimed in on the recent addition of his old friend and defensive adviser, Dom Capers, who was on his staff with the Jags in 1999-2000. In a nutshell, Coughlin told Action News that Capers’ “experience, knowledge, thoroughness, and detail” would help the organization.

As we have in the past, we’d also like to take this time to direct you all to Coughlin’s non-profit Jay Fund organization, which has done a lot of work in the Jacksonville community to tackle childhood cancer. Please feel free to check out their site here, as Coughlin has been a great figure in the community throughout his tenure in the NFL.
