The wildest moment to come from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl boat parade came when Tom Brady took the Lombardi Trophy and tossed it across open water to teammate Cameron Brate in a nearby boat.
The Lombardi Trophy did safely make it to the other boat, but it was easy to see all the ways that idea could have ended poorly.
Lorraine Grohs, the daughter of the Lombardi Trophy’s original silversmith, even demanded an apology from Brady.
Well, we have finally heard Brady’s take on the entire situation. Brady joined The Late Late Show with James Corden and offered his breakdown of the trophy toss.
Brady said when asked what he was thinking:
“First of all, I was not thinking at that moment. There was not a thought. It was ‘this seems like really fun to do.’ Not to mention, when you get your hands on one of those trophies, there are a lot of really sharp edges on the bottom where the stand is. I found out later, had that been an incomplete pass, that would have went down like 80 feet. So, I am so happy that Cam (caught it).”
He added that he thought it was hilarious that his 8-year-old daughter, Vivian, was the voice of reason who told him not to throw the trophy. He, of course, did not heed that advice.
Thankfully, the trophy survived that toss.
