Tom Brady deflects questions about contract situation

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady talked with the media for the first time this offseason following the team’s mandatory minicamp on Thursday at Gillette Stadium.

Among a plethora of topics, Brady was asked about going into the final season of his current contract. It is uncharted territory for Brady, who enters his 20th season with the team and has never played on a contract year.

“I don’t think about it too much,” Brady said Thursday.

He did not confirm or deny if he felt comfortable playing on the last year of his contract, stating: “I think those things work themselves out.”

When asked about if he and the Patriots had been in the mix of any negations, Brady left that alone too.

“That’s none of your business,” Brady joked. “I’ve never really talked about my contract or anything like that so, I don’t really want to start doing that now.”

In past years, the 41-year-old quarterback, who will be 42 before the regular season starts, and the Patriots have made a habit out of re-negotiating during the offseason. That hasn’t been the case thus far in 2019.

Still, however, it is not to say the Patriots will kickoff Week One without coming to terms on an extension. After all, Brady’s contract has historically been an asset for the Patriots, and bringing his current cap hit down from $27 million would surely help when it comes to the dollars and cents framework.

Brady attended all three days of the Patriots mandatory minicamp from Tuesday to Thursday, but it is not known if he will be in attendance during OTAs on Monday.
