Tom Brady creates Twitter account and 'announces retirement'

NFL teams and supporters are desperately waiting for the day Tom Brady retires.

The New England Patriots quarterback is widely considered the greatest player of all-time having led his franchise to six Super Bowl wins.

The 41-year-old is still going strong after winning the top prize last year - but he gave his rivals a brief moment of hope that he might be calling it a day.

Brady finally joined Twitter on April Fool's Day and declared he is calling it quits to focus on the social media site in a gag which caught many off guard.

Unfortunately for those that have to face off against the experienced signal caller, he is set to be back to lead the Patriots into their title defence when the 2019 NFL season gets underway later this year.

"I'm retiring. In my spare time, I'll be tweeting." Brady declared in his first ever tweet, followed by the hashtag "LFG", standing for "Let's f****** go".

He later replied to his own tweet asking "Was this a bad joke?"

His original tweet quickly racked up over 16,000 RTs and nearly 40,000 likes with fans declaring that he "wins" April Fool's Day and others admitting they "wish it was real life".

A fan of divisional rivals the Miami Dolphins replied: "you have done everything. Ride off into the sunset" whilst another user added: "I wish today was April 2nd".

His team, the New England Patriots, responded with a GIF whilst Twitter themselves said "Now that's how the GOAT (Greatest of all-time) joins Twitter".

It was also labelled a "perfect first tweet", whilst another fan joked "who let Dad join twitter".

Brady is married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen and the pair share two children together.

He is known by his strict and controversial diet, the "TB12 Method", which involves drinking 1/32 of his body weight in water daily and avoiding consumption of most fruits, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, coffee, Gatorade, white sugar or flour, gluten, dairy, soda, cereal, white rice, potatoes and bread.

Despite plenty of criticism, the method has worked for Brady, who is still in strong physical condition and ready to remain playing at the highest level for a 20th straight season.
