Tollcross Housing Association to welcome first residents

The first residents at Tollcross Housing Association’s £12 million development are expected to arrive this month completing a five-year project.

Development at Dunira Street started in 2014 with tenants moving in last summer allowing construction at Braidfauld Street to commence shortly after.

Funding from the Scottish Government and allocated by Glasgow City Council allowed the organisation to create these homes for those who need it most in the East End.

Local councillor Thomas Kerr visited the site recently to see how the company worked.

He said: “Housing is a big problem for people in my area. There is a massive housing crisis in the city and we need to find a solution to fix this particularly for young people.

“In my party there is an emphasis for ownership of a property but for the people in my area that is a dream not a reality.

“Tollcross is great because it is tailored to the needs of the community and rent prices are low.”

Before work could begin Tollcross Housing Association had to get permission to remove residents living in the tenement buildings at the time before flattening them.

Once the first development was complete contractors began the second phase by creating the flats on Braidfauld Street.

Chief Executive, Clive Douglas, has confirmed the fist residents will be able to move into these properties this month with the rest of the occupants moving in by September.

He said: “We are hoping the first tenants will move in on August 19 and with more move in each week. We have 24 flats and hope to fill six each week.

“It is amazing how people change when given an opportunity like this. Feedback has been great, and people have really looked after their home.

“We try and charge the minimum which is £400 per month rent at the moment. We help people who have been made homeless or struggling to cope on Universal Credit.”

People on the association’s waiting are expected to find out this week if they have been successful in obtaining one of these properties.
