Toll bridge on Nottinghamshire border reopens with safety measures in place

A toll bridge that borders Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire has reopened with safety measures in place to protect staff and drivers passing through.

Drivers can pay the 40p toll at Dunham Bridge via contactless payment and will be "encouraged" to hand over the correct change if they choose to pay by cash.

Staff are wearing face masks, gloves, and are keeping hand sanitiser nearby as part of the Dunham Bridge Company's efforts to mitigate any potential impact of Covid-19.

If cash is used and the driver is due change from the toll keeper, the option is also open to the public to donate this to the NHS Heroes charity instead of pocketing it.

The toll bridge located between North Clifton and Rampton was forced to close its booths at the end of May as the UK approached its peak during the coronavirus outbreak.

However, it has now taken the decision to reopen and resume charges with certain measures in place.

A spokesperson for the Dunham Bridge Company said: "All our staff have masks, gloves and hand sanitisers and we're accepting contactless payment.

"We do encourage people to pay correct cash to our toll keepers who are all behind screens, and there is an option to not take the change and donate it to a NHS charity - NHS Heroes.

"Our staff in the toll booths are never more than 2 metres near each other. Also, whereas we would normally charge 24 hours a day, we're reviewing that right now and started around 8am today (May 20).

"We are following the current government advice and we have even had our procedures vetted by our health and safety advisers."

Those who work at the toll bridge have also said they have noticed traffic begin to pick up again over the last week and therefore have implemented these measures to ensure the public or its staff are not exposed "to any inappropriate risk."
