Vaccinations against the novel coronavirus have begun for people aged 85 or older in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, who do not reside at nursing facilities for the elderly.
Inoculations for the elderly in Tokyo's 23 wards are scheduled to get fully underway in the days to come.
At St. Luke's Center for Clinical Academia, one of the inoculation venues in Chuo Ward, about 150 people aged 85 or older who had reserved a spot in advance received a shot on Sunday.
"It wasn't painful," said an 88-year-old man who lives in the neighborhood. "I'm relieved it went smoothly. I'll stay home and relax during the holiday week, except for an early morning walk."
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the start of vaccinations will stretch from the Golden Week holiday period through mid-May for elderly people in the 23 wards who do not reside in nursing facilities.
Tokyo's wards are home to about 2 million elderly people.
