The Chiyoda Ward government in Tokyo has converted a trailer into a mobile indoor smoking lounge.
The ward plans to set up 100 smoking areas by fiscal 2024, aiming to eliminate smoking on the street. However, as it has received complaints from people living around the outdoor smoking areas, it decided to make use of a trailer that can be moved if necessary.
The indoor smoking facility has been installed in the Kanda-Nishikicho district for the time being.
"We smokers are feeling ashamed, so we appreciate this new attempt," a 72-year-old company employee who stopped by on a visit to the area for business said on Feb. 26 the first day of the facility's operation.
The ward plans to add two more trailers in the next fiscal year, and included about 10 million yen for the mobile smoking lounges in the initial budget for the general account.
