Tokyo virus cases fall below 2,000 for 1st time in a month

Tokyo reported 1,915 new cases of novel coronavirus on Monday, falling below 2,000 for the first time in just over a month.

The last time Tokyo saw the figure below 2,000 was on July 26, when 1,429 cases were reported.

The daily tally in the capital dropped by 532 from the same day last week, marking the eighth consecutive day that the week-on-week figure came in lower.

According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the capital fell by nine from Sunday to 287, while 12 deaths of people in their 30s to 90s were reported.

The seven-day moving average of new cases was 3,708, down 20% from 4,659 in the preceding seven-day period.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said the number of people with serious COVID-19 symptoms nationwide rose by five from the previous day to 2,075 at the start of Monday, renewing a record high for the 18th day in a row.

In Osaka Prefecture, there were 1,605 new cases reported Monday, up 48 from the same day in the previous week. The figure is the prefecture's highest for a Monday.
