Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike observed the demonstration held in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, during which a bus was first filled with smoke, then the smoke was cleared through only the use of the air conditioning system. The bus' interior, which had been white from the smoke, was completely ventilated in only five minutes. Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, the demand for sightseeing buses has dropped by nearly 90%.
"We hope such efforts will help dispel the image of buses being closed spaces with high infection risks," said Nobuichi Ueda, the 67-year-old head of the association.
