Tokyo set to mark record daily high of 280 newly confirmed coronavirus cases

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said more than 280 people are expected to be newly confirmed Thursday as being infected with the novel coronavirus, exceeding last Friday's 243 to mark a record high for the capital.

The number of infected people in Tokyo exceeds 8,600.

"The number of tests conducted [in one day] was a record high of more than 4,000," Koike said to reporters at the Tokyo metropolitan government office. "An increase in the number of tests conducted increases the probability of finding more people who are positive."

From July 9 on, there were multiple days on which more than 200 people in Tokyo newly confirmed as being infected with the virus. In the week through Wednesday, the number of new patients in Tokyo reached 1,306, exceeding the previous high recorded in April during the state of emergency.

The metropolitan government on Wednesday raised the infection situation level to the highest fourth level of "It is believed that the infection is spreading" and is asking people and businesses to cooperate in measures to prevent infections.
