Tokyo confirmed 501 new infections with the novel coronavirus Wednesday, the first time since 508 cases were reported June 3 that the figure surpassed 500.
The tally also was higher than that of the previous Wednesday.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the daily moving average of newly infected people over the past seven days was 384.6, down 4% from the 401.6 in the previous period.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients was 45, the same as Tuesday.
