Tokyo says sayonara to Olympic rings monument

The large Olympic rings monument, the symbol of the Games, was removed Wednesday at Odaiba Marine Park in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

The item, which floats on the water at the park, will be replaced by a monument featuring three agitos, or the symbol for the Paralympic Games that are set to open in Tokyo on Aug. 24.

The Olympic monument is 15.3 meters tall, 32.6 meters wide and 1.7 meters thick. A boat slowly tugged the monument -- including the base on which it stands -- toward its next destination, a dockyard in Yokohama.

The monument was placed at Odaiba Marine Park in January last year. Because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, it was temporarily removed before being put back in December and becoming a popular spot to take photos.
