The Tokyo metropolitan government announced Monday that 968 new cases of infections with the novel coronavirus were confirmed in the capital.
It was the first time since July 19, when the number was 727, that the daily number came in below 1,000.
Monday's number decreased by 947 from a week ago, marking the 15th consecutive day that the number was lower than that of the same day the previous week.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in Tokyo increased by three from the previous day to 267. Also on the day, 16 people infected with the novel coronavirus in their 40s to 90s were confirmed dead.
In Osaka Prefecture, the daily number was 924, the Osaka prefectural government announced the same day.
It was the first time since Aug. 16 that the figure fell below 1,000. Two infected people were confirmed dead.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the seven-day moving average of new infections in the capital was 2,414, down 35% from that of the previous seven-day period's 3,708.
