
The Tokyo metropolitan government logged a record 4,166 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, up 989 from the same day last week and topping 4,000 for the first time in four days.
The seven-day moving average increased 78% to 3,479, compared with 1,955 cases for the preceding seven-day period.
The number of people with serious symptoms was 115, up three from the previous day.
Okinawa Prefecture logged a record 602 cases on Wednesday, while Fukuoka Prefecture predicted cases would exceed 700 for the first time.
Record daily tallies were also logged in the prefectures of Gunma, which confirmed 204 cases, Shizuoka, 202, Niigata, 78 and Mie, 74.
