The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 856 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the first time in three days the daily figure has exceeded 800 in the capital.
The tally exceeds the previous Tuesday record of 563 cases reported on Dec. 22.
Among the newly confirmed cases, 125 people were aged 65 or older.
The number of people in serious condition increased by three from the previous day to 84, the highest number since the state of emergency was lifted.
