The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 5,405 new coronavirus cases on Friday, down by 368 from the same day last week when a record 5,773 cases were logged.
The daily tally was lower than the figure recorded on the same day of the preceding week for the first time in eight days.
According to the metropolitan government, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients fell by one to 273 and the deaths of seven people in their 50s to 90s were confirmed.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients nationwide increased by 51 to 1,816 on Friday, marking a record high for the eighth consecutive day, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.
