
Another 4,200 infections with the novel coronavirus were confirmed in Tokyo on Wednesday.
The number of COVID-19 patients deemed seriously ill under the Tokyo metropolitan government's criteria rose by 21 from the previous day to 197, setting a record high for the second consecutive day.
The number of seriously ill patients has increased by 40 since Monday, when the figure was at 157.
According to the metropolitan government, the seven-day moving average of new cases was 3,984, up 14.5% from 3,479 in the preceding seven-day period.
The same day, Osaka reported a daily record of 1,490 new cases. The number increased by 266 from Wednesday last week.
