Tokyo prosecutors drop charges against Russian linked to SoftBank espionage

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office on Thursday dropped its indictment of the former Russian diplomat suspected of involvement in obtaining SoftBank Corp. secrets.

Police had sent papers to prosecutors on Anton Kalinin, 52, an official at the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in Japan on suspicion of abetting a third party to violate the Unfair Competition Prevention Law for encouraging the employee to obtain the trade secrets. However, the prosecutors decided not to indict him on the grounds that Kalinin had "already left the country and had no prospect of reentering Japan."

According to the prosecutors office, Kalinin was suspected of abetting a former SoftBank employee, 48, who was arrested for handing over company secrets at a Tokyo restaurant on Nov. 20, 2018. Kalinin returned to Russia from Narita Airport on Feb. 10 this year.
