Tokyo Paralympics schedule decided

The Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced the venue and schedule for the Tokyo Paralympic Games, which will start on August 24 next year, on Monday.

As in the case of the Olympics, the Games will be held at the same venue 1 day earlier than originally scheduled. Over 12 days, 22 sports and 539 events will be held, and a record 4,400 people are expected to participate. To ensure the safety of athletes and spectators, the organizing committee will continue to study ways to prevent infection from the coronavirus.

The opening ceremony will be held on August 24, 2021, at 8 p.m. at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo. Competition will begin the following day. A record-high 63 gold medals will be up for grabs in one day on the first Sunday of the Paralympics on Aug. 29, which is being dubbed "Golden Sunday." Enthusiasm for the tournament is likely to increase.

On September 5, the last day of the Paralympic Games, men and women marathons, including wheelchair events, are scheduled to go through the city. The closing ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. at the Japan National Stadium.

"With the new schedule set, the organizing committee will step up preparations ahead of next year's Games," said sports director Koji Murofushi of the organizing committee at a press conference.
