Tokyo Paralympics: Ayrshire athlete one win away from medal

An Ayrshire-based athlete is just one win away from a medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Dundonald Boccia star Scott McCowan booked his place in a bronze play-off match after a convincing victory earlier today.

The BC3 player — whose ramp assistant is his father Gary — has had a terrific run in Tokyo.

But his dreams of making it through to the finals ended in a dramatic tie-break defeat to world champion Greg Polychronidis of Greece.

However, earlier today, the Scotsman stormed through to the bronze medal play-off with a cool, calm 9-1 victory over Brazil’s Evelyn de Oliveira.

Scott, whose brother Jamie is also representing the GB Boccia team in Tokyo, will tomorrow fight it out for bronze with Australia’s Daniel Michel.

Reflecting on his defeat to Polychronidis, Scott, 30, said: “This is the best I’ve played in any tournament but ultimately it just wasn’t enough today.

“I’ll come back fighting on Thursday and if I can put in the same level of performance, I should be able to get that medal.”

Boccia is a precision sport, like bowls and petanque, for athletes with severe physical disabilities.

Boccia has been a Paralympic sport since the 1984 games in Los Angeles, when Great Britain won gold on that occasion.
