The Tokyo metropolitan government on Thursday ordered 27 restaurants and bars to shorten their operating hours, after they failed to comply with its earlier request to do so.
The metropolitan government issued the order under Article 45 of the special measures law for new strains of influenza, making it the first local government to do so.
The special measures law was revised in February, allowing local governments to make an order of this kind.
