Tokyo Olympics will push back last train times

The last train times on many lines will be pushed back by 30 to 90 minutes during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo Games organizing committee and the Tokyo metropolitan government said.

About 60 train lines of 19 railway operators will offer the later services so public transportation will be available after Olympic events that end late at night. The details of the operation schedule will continue to be examined and adjusted by each railway operator and will be announced in the spring of 2020, according to Friday's announcement.

The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games said some events will end at 11 p.m. or later at eight competition venues, such as Ariake Arena in Koto Ward. Since spectator transportation is basically limited to public transport, the organizing committee and the metropolitan government have been coordinating with the railway operators about changing schedules.

For central Tokyo, through which many spectators pass, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) will operate the Yamanote Line past 2 a.m. and Tokyo Metro Co. and Toei Subway will push back the last train time on all lines by an hour or more. These operators and other JR and private railway lines that run services from central Tokyo to the suburbs will mainly push back times on routes heading to the suburbs.

These train schedules will be applied from July 24, the day of the opening ceremony, to Aug. 9, when the closing ceremony will be held.
