Tokyo Olympics: US women’s football team suffer shock defeat against Sweden in Games opener

World Cup winners USA saw their 44-match unbeaten run come to a shocking end in Tokyo as Sweden handed out a 3-0 beating in their Olympic opener.

Sweden knocked out the gold medal favourites at the quarter-final stage in Rio five years ago and again got the better of Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and co.

Stina Blackstenius scored twice to give the Swedes a more than deserved victory and the US a wakeup call in the first of their three group matches.

Blackstenius capped a spell of pressure with a header into the far corner and then fired past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher after the break.

Lina Hurtig confirmed a first defeat for US coach Vlatko Andonovski, who took over when former coach Jill Ellis stepped down following the team’s World Cup 2019 victory in France.

Elsewhere, Marta became the first player to score in five straight Olympics as Brazil beat China 5-0.
