Tokyo Olympics: Indian rowers round off campaign with 11th-place finish

Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat capped a creditable performance through the week as they settled for 11th place in the men’s lightweight doubles sculls at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday.

The Army rowers clocked 6 minutes 29.66 seconds while finishing fifth and last in Final B even as Ireland, Germany and Italy climbed the podium in that order after topping Final A at the Sea Forest Waterway.

“It is of immense satisfaction to me as a coach. It has been a long journey and not an easy one,” said the Indian team’s chief coach Ismail Baig.

Singh and Lal had ensured India’s best ever result at the Olympics across all disciplines after qualifying for the semifinals, which guaranteed them a top-12 finish.

They failed to make the cut for Final A after coming sixth in the second semifinal on Wednesday. But qualifying for Final B was the realistic target.
