Tokyo Olympics 2021 LIVE! Day Nine updates; men’s 100m final result after Max Whitlock wins gymnastics gold

Tokyo Olympics 2021 LIVE!

It’s been another successful day for Team GB on Day Nine of the Games in Japan.

In a first for both the Olympics and Great Britain, Charlotte Worthington sensationally won gold in the inaugural women’s BMX park freestyle final. Declan Brooks added a bronze in the men’s final, further enhancing the reputation of this fledgling sport.

Gymnast Max Whitlock won the men’s pommel horse final with an impressive score, supporting the claim made by Team GB that he is ““the greatest gymnast this country has ever produced”. This is his sixth Olympic medal over three Games.

GB also claimed silver in the 4x100m men’s medley relay to cap their best ever Games in the pool with eight medals.

Super Saturday saw Britain boost their total - now at 32 - with a world-record triumph in the 4x100m mixed medley relay coming hot on the heels of gold in the first-ever mixed triathlon relay.

There was gold for Beth Shriever in the women’s BMX racing plus a silver for Kye Whyte in the men’s BMX racing.

Karriss Artingstall and Emma Wilson claimed bronze in boxing and windsurfing respectively, although there was huge disappointment for Team GB athletics poster girl and main track hope Dina Asher-Smith as she failed to reach the final of the women’s 100m before tearfully withdrawing from the 200m due to a hamstring injury.

It was a successful day for Italian athletics as Lamont Marcell Jacobs won gold in the men’s 100m while Gianmarco Tamberi also claimed top spot in the men’s high jump, though he shared the spoils with Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar.

There was frustration and disappointment for Britain’s Zharnel Hughes who was disqualified from the men’s 100m final after a false start. His pain was shared by GB’s men’s hockey side who lost 3-1 to India in the quarterfinals.

Alexander Zverev became the first German man to win a singles gold medal in Olympic tennis with victory over Karen Khachanov. The Russian Olympic Committee pair of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev captured the mixed doubles gold.

American Xander Schauffele clinched the Olympic men’s golf gold medal on a nail-biting final day that ended with a seven-way play-off for the bronze medal.
