The Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games is discussing ways to curb ballooning costs due to the postponement of the Games. The committee narrowed down a list of about 200 cost-cutting considerations to 52 and plans to present them to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission, which meets on a two-day schedule starting Thursday.
The 52 items include the number of participants of the Games, canceling the opening ceremony of the IOC general meeting scheduled just before the opening of the Games, and the reception and welcoming events for Olympic families, such as officials of the IOC and sports associations.
The items also target the opening and closing ceremonies, the entrance ceremony for the athletes' village, and public viewing events called "live sites" at which the games are broadcast on a large screen.
To boost the momentum of the Games, the decorations of venues and the athletes' village will also be reviewed.
The organizing committee plans to decide on items to be simplified at the Coordination Commission meeting and start work to calculate specific amounts to be reduced.
