Tokyo Metro Co. unveiled the new-look interior of Ginza Station in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, on Friday, after the partial completion of renovations that began in fiscal 2017.
The station, which is served by the Ginza, Marunouchi and Hibiya lines, is used by more than 250,000 passengers every day.
Navigating the route to train platforms or buildings at street level used to be a labyrinthine task. The station now has features making it easier for users to see at a glance where they are, including 130 newly installed pillars in the colors of the lines that serve the station, to indicate the area of train platforms.
Also, the ceiling at some ticket gates features an image showing a view of the location at street level.
A bright, 6-meter diameter glass ceiling panel shows nearby buildings including the Ginza Mitsukoshi department store and the Wako department store with its famous clock tower in the ticket hall under the Ginza 4-chome crossing on the Ginza line.
"We hope people enjoy the elegant and serene Ginza-like atmosphere," a Tokyo Metro official said.
Renovations to the ground entrances and exits are ongoing, with work on the entire station not expected to be completed until fiscal 2023.
