Tokyo man suspected of theft arrested after effectively giving police his address

A Tokyo man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of theft after reporting his change of address to ensure that he receives his 100,000 yen payout from the government, police said Wednesday.

Kenichi Yoshida, 31, an unemployed resident of Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, is suspected of stealing 77,000 yen from a cash machine at a post office in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, on March 1, while employed there as a delivery staff member, according to police.

He immediately fled after the alleged theft, but later reported that his address had changed from within the Tama area, also in Tokyo, to Shinjuku Ward, police said.

He was quoted as saying, "I reported the address change because I wanted my 100,000 yen stimulus payout that is to be given to residents [to help them get through economic difficulty] amid the novel coronavirus."
