The Tokyo metropolitan government logged a record 4,058 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Saturday, marking the first time the daily tally has exceeded 4,000 and the fourth consecutive day the tally has exceeded 3,000.
The figure was up 2,930 from the same day in the previous week.
The seven-day moving average was 2,920, more than double the preceding seven-day average of 1,345.7, according to the metropolitan government.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients increased by seven from the previous day to 95.
Osaka Prefecture confirmed 1,040 new cases, up 757 from last Saturday. The daily tally exceeded 1,000 for the first time since May 8 when it logged 1,018 cases.
