Tokyo logs over 16,000 new cases

The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 16,538 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Thursday, surpassing the record number of 14,086 logged on Wednesday. The number of daily cases increased by 7,900 from a week ago, exceeding 10,000 for the third consecutive day.

Aichi Prefecture also saw a record-high tally for the third consecutive day, at 5,160 new cases, while Fukuoka Prefecture reported 3,955 new cases, the highest ever for the prefecture. Aomori and Akita prefectures also recorded their highest ever daily cases.

Osaka Prefecture confirmed 9,711 cases on Thursday, down from 9,813 on Wednesday but up by 3,778 from a week ago.
