Tokyo reported 419 newly confirmed infections with the novel coronavirus on Monday, down 154 from the previous Monday.
The tally was under 500 for the first time since April 26, exactly three weeks ago.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients was 85, up one from the previous day.
In Osaka, 382 new cases of infection were confirmed, marking the ninth consecutive day the figure has been below 1,000 in the prefecture. There were 23 people with COVID-19 who died.
The seven-day moving average of new infections in Tokyo was 784.4, up from 779.1 in the previous seven-day period, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
