The Tokyo metropolitan government logged 969 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, up 348 from the same day last week. The number of seriously ill patients was 86, up five from the previous day.
The seven-day moving average rose to 874, up 9.4% from 798.9 last week.
Aichi Prefecture reported 679 new cases on Wednesday, marking a record high for the second consecutive day. It was the first time the daily tally has exceeded 600 in the prefecture.
Meanwhile, the Hokkaido prefectural government logged a record-high 529 new cases on the day.
