A record 50 people died from COVID-19 on Friday in Osaka Prefecture, the prefectural government said on the day. The prefecture also confirmed 1,005 people newly tested positive for the virus on the day, surpassing 1,000 for the first time in five days.
Tokyo confirmed 907 new infections with the novel coronavirus on Friday, up 209 from a week earlier. It was the first time in four days in which the daily figure exceeded that from the same day of the previous week.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients decreased by three to 69.
The seven-day average of new infections in the capital was 766.4, down about 1% from 773.4 the preceding week, according to the metropolitan government.
In Aichi Prefecture, a record 443 people tested positive for the virus on Friday, surpassing the previous high of 431 set on Jan. 7.
