
Tokyo confirmed 879 new infections with the novel coronavirus on Sunday, up 244 from last Sunday and the second day in a row in which the number of cases exceeded that from the same day of the previous week.
Last Sunday saw 635 new cases.
The metropolitan government said Sunday's figure brought the seven-day moving average in the capital to 833.1, up 14.6% from the previous seven-day figure of 727.1. The moving average exceeded 800 for the first time since Feb. 1, when it stood at 819.3.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients remained the same at 63.
Osaka Prefecture logged 1,057 new cases on Sunday, surpassing the 1,000 mark for a sixth consecutive day.
The total number of infections so far in the nation exceeded 600,000 on Sunday, less than one month after the figure topped 500,000 on April 9.
