Tokyo reported 854 new infections with the novel coronavirus on Friday, down 53 from a week earlier. It was the first time in four days the daily tally has been under 900.
Osaka Prefecture logged 576 new cases, the sixth straight day that the figure has been under 1,000. The number of deaths linked to COVID-19 was 33.
In the capital, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients remained at 84, the same as the previous day.
The seven-day moving average of new infections in Tokyo was 926.3, up 20.9% from 766.4 in the previous seven-day period, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
