Tokyo reported 542 new infections with the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, down 190 from a week earlier.
The daily tally has now fallen below that of the same day in the previous week for 12 consecutive days.
The seven-day moving average of new cases was 611, or 80.7% of the 756.9 recorded in the previous week.
Nine people in their 50s to 80s were confirmed to have died from COVID-19, according to the metropolitan government. The number of seriously ill people in the capital rose by three to 71.
The Osaka prefectural government confirmed 327 new cases and 27 deaths linked to COVID-19 on Tuesday. In Okinawa Prefecture, a record 256 people tested positive with the virus.
