The Tokyo metropolitan government logged 5,534 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, up 545 from the same day last week and marking a record high for a Thursday.
The seven-day moving average of new cases was 4,774, up 20.1% from 3,976 in the preceding seven-day period.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients fell by one to 274, and the deaths of four people in their 70s and 80s were confirmed.
Osaka logged 2,443 cases on Thursday, up from 2,296 on Wednesday and marking a record-high for the third consecutive day. The prefecture reported one COVID-19-related death.
