
The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 5,386 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, up 1,186 from the same day last week and marking a record high for a Wednesday.
According to the metropolitan government, the seven-day moving average of new cases rose to a new high of 4,697, up 18% from 3,984 in the preceding seven-day period. The number of seriously ill patients in the capital decreased by one from Tuesday to 275, which is 78 more than last Wednesday. Six people in their 60s to 80s died with COVID-19.
Newly confirmed cases in Osaka Prefecture totaled 2,296 on Wednesday, exceeding 2,000 for the first time there and a jump from 1,856 on the previous day. Aichi, Fukuoka, Miyagi and Okinawa were also among the prefectures that marked record highs on Wednesday.
