Tokyo logs 4,704 new infections, Osaka sees record 2,830

Tokyo confirmed 4,704 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Thursday, down 830 from the same day last week, the Tokyo metropolitan government said. The daily tally fell below the number of the same day the previous week for the fourth consecutive day.

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the capital fell by one from Wednesday to 276. The deaths of 11 patients in their 50s to 90s were confirmed.

Tokyo's seven-day moving average decreased by 9% to 4,353, compared with 4,774 cases for the preceding seven-day period.

Osaka Prefecture confirmed 2,830 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Thursday, topping the previous record of 2,808 set on the previous day. The deaths of six patients were confirmed.

Central Japan prefectures also marked record cases. Aichi Prefecture confirmed 2,141 new cases on Thursday. It was the first time the daily tally has exceeded 2,000 in the prefecture, which logged a record high for the third consecutive day. Mie Prefecture reported a record high of 515 infections, exceeding the previous record of 432 marked on Sunday. Gifu Prefecture confirmed a record 384 new cases, topping the previous high of 382 set on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the country, Gunma logged 337 infections and Aomori confirmed 139, both of which were record highs for these prefectures.

Nationwide there were confirmed to be 1,974 seriously ill patients at the start of Thursday, marking a record high daily number for the 14th consecutive day, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. The daily tally was up by 10 from the previous day.
